Recently, in an article on the homepage, Samsung said the 200MP telephoto lens is "the next important thing in smartphone cameras". Accordingly, the company explains that the telephoto lens will improve the distortion of portrait photos when compared to shooting with the sensor on the main camera.
Samsung 200MP sensor
Samsung shares that the sensor on the telephoto lens is usually much smaller in size than the main camera sensor. This difference is the cause of significant differences in quality between the main camera and the telephoto camera. A larger telephoto sensor therefore closes the gap in image quality, while also providing a shallower depth of field, creating a blurred background in the first place when taking portrait photos.
Samsung also shared that high-resolution sensors such as 200MP cameras can provide good zoom capabilities without losing quality. Previously, the mid-range smartphone Realme 11 Pro Plus was equipped with a 200MP main camera to provide 4x lossless zoom capability. However, this reduces resolution quality because the camera cannot use pixel binning to improve image quality like at 1x.
According to experts, a 200MP telephoto camera can cause other problems such as a larger protruding camera, higher cost, and reduced image quality in low light conditions. However, with advantages such as good long-range zoom ability, high quality, and distortion-free portrait photos, it is likely that Samsung and many manufacturers will equip 200MP telephoto lenses on phones by 2024.
