Samsung's tri-fold phone continues to be revealed, showing that preparations for the launch of this device in 2025 are completely grounded. In the context of Samsung Electronics' recent business results not meeting expectations, the company has had to adjust its strategy, and a new patent has just revealed more details about this potential tri-fold design.
Lower-than-expected foldable screen sales push Samsung to innovate
Samsung Display said that foldable screen sales in 2024 are not as expected, partly due to slow sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. Fierce competition from rivals, especially Chinese companies, is also a factor. In an effort to turn the situation around, Samsung has bet big on launching a groundbreaking tri-fold device.
Samsung's new patent reveals technology that makes tri-fold phones more durable
According to the patent, Samsung has designed a system with strategically placed openings to reduce pressure on the screen when folded and unfolded. The body integrates adhesive layers and a stainless steel or glass support plate, keeping the screen stable whether folded or unfolded. An anti-reflective layer and an internal protective "shield" system help prevent dirt and increase the durability of the device.
Samsung filed this patent in July 2021, but it was not approved until November 2024. However, while Samsung perfected its technology, Huawei jumped ahead with the Mate XT Ultimate Design, becoming the first brand to introduce a tri-fold device to the market. However, with the advancements in technology, Samsung's tri-fold phone still promises to provide a superior experience.
