Folding phones are very expensive. Their selling prices have not decreased significantly in the past few years. However, according to a new report, Samsung is trying to cut the cost of folding screens with an interesting method.
THEELEC said Samsung Display will use inkjet printing technology to make folding screen edges. Previously, Samsung used MDD (micro dry-process decoration) from Segyung Hitech. This process uses a membrane that is later cut to form the edges. Meanwhile, the new inkjet printing method already has screen edges.
The screen edges are attached to the OLED panel to protect the display. They are located between the display and the ultra-thin glass on the folding screens of Samsung Galaxy phones.
It's unclear whether there will be any noticeable differences by users. However, it seems that the benefits are mainly about economic efficiency. THEELEC explains that βusing inkjet printing, the initial film created is much longer than the MDD, the source said, so more of the film that could potentially become a screen bezel can be cut out of the original film. β
According to rumors, Samsung is developing an affordable folding phone model, which could be launched alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6. However, the latest information may signal that Samsung is aiming for widespread cost-cutting. The Galaxy Z series is facing competitors from other cheaper brands. Therefore, it would be great if the next generation of the Galaxy Z series has a starting price lower than VND 25,990,000 and VND 40,990,000 of the current generation.
Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Flip 6 are expected to be released later this year.
