At the Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris, Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Here's what you need to know about this new phone model.

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Fold series for five years and is a pioneer in the market. However, due to increasingly fierce competition and the Galaxy Z series receiving only minor improvements, Samsung has lost its leading position in the folding screen phone market since this year.

Luckily, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 arrives with the biggest upgrades since 2021's Galaxy Z Fold 3.

First, Samsung changed the aspect ratio of the screen. The long, narrow shape of the outer display has long been criticized, so Samsung made it wider. The outer screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has an aspect ratio of 22.1:9, a bit wider than the 23.1:9 figure of the previous generation. For comparison, OnePlus Open has an external display aspect ratio of 20:9, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra's is 19.5:9.

Therefore, the main screen is also a bit wider with an aspect ratio of 20.9:18.

Samsung has also made the Galaxy Z Fold 6 thinner with a three-dimensional dimension when in the closed state of 68.1mm × 153.5mm × 12.1mm. When fully opened, the product measures 132.6mm × 153.5mm × 5.6mm. The weight of Galaxy Z Fold 6 is 239g, 6% lighter than that of Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Inside the device is Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 12GB of memory. There are a total of three storage options: 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. Samsung has enlarged the vapor chamber even further to improve cooling and claims a maximum screen brightness of 2600 nits.

The camera system remains the same: main 50MP, super wide angle 12MP, telephoto 3x 10MP, front 10MP, and under the screen 4MP. The battery capacity is also kept the same, 4400mAh like the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Fold 4, and Galaxy Z Fold 3. Many other aspects such as the fingerprint recognition sensor and aluminum frame are also unchanged.

Another big upgrade is IP48 dust and water resistance. For comparison, the previous generation was only IPX8 water-resistant. While still falling short of “traditional” bar phones, this is the first time the Galaxy Z series is dust-resistant.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 will also offer the same Galaxy AI features as the Galaxy S24 series. The only exclusive Galaxy AI feature of the new foldable phones is the ability to display translations on the external display (like Google's Pixel Fold). The S Pen experience on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will also be more tightly integrated with Galaxy AI with features like Smart Select and Smart Sketch - which uses AI to create images based on rough drawings.

Gemini will also be more deeply integrated into Samsung's latest products, including the ability to run multiple windows at the same time.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 will ship with One UI 6.1.1 based on Android 14. Like the Galaxy S24 series, the product will receive Android security updates for up to seven years.

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Z Fold 6 on July 24, available in three color options: Metallic Gray, Navy Blue and Rosé Pink. There are also two color options that can only be found at Samsung's online store: Crafted Black and Classic White.
