Samsung's future foldable phone models – including the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 – may have more durable main screens. The company may want to communicate this information through a new marketing keyword: Ironflex.
Samsung registered the Ironflex trademark at the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service on January 3. The paperwork describes “foldable OLED display panels” for products including not only “foldable smartphones” but also “foldable tablets” and “micro-displays.” wearable and foldable diopter.
Challenge the stigma surrounding the durability of folding screens.
Samsung's foldable platform got off to a rough start five years ago when the Galaxy Fold was launched. Many units had broken home screens (partly due to a misunderstanding about the built-in screen protector) and the product was temporarily postponed.
Since then, Samsung has done everything in its power to improve both the durability of its foldable panels and the public image associated with this emerging technology.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are much more durable than the originals released nearly half a decade ago. However, many potential buyers are still concerned about the durability of folding screen phones.
It is still unknown what Ironflex means. However, the name may be aimed at winning the trust of customers and convincing them that foldable Galaxy devices are more durable than ever.
Based on the timing of the trademark registration, it is highly likely that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be the first devices to proudly carry the Ironflex brand. As expected, they will be officially introduced later this summer.
Until then, Samsung is focusing on “traditional” phone models. The company will announce the Galaxy S24 series on January 18 at the Unpacked event in San Jose, California. Throughout the first half of 2024, Samsung will also announce many mid-range devices in the Galaxy A series.
