Switching between platforms is never easy. Fortunately, the European Union (EU) is trying to make things smoother to promote competition and prevent monopolies. To comply with the EU's new Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple is making it easier to transfer data from iPhones to Android phones.

Apple is developing a solution to transfer data more easily from iPhone to Android phone

Apple revealed in its Non-Confidential Summary that it is making necessary changes to iOS to improve data portability between iOS and “different operating systems.” Apple plans to roll out this change in the fall of 2025. The document, first spotted by The Verge, reveals that Apple is making other changes to comply with the EU DMA, which is in effect from this week.

Accordingly, Apple will not create a dedicated application. Instead, the company will provide the tools needed to extract user data for use by other operating system builders.

Google is now offering the Move to Android app to help users transfer data, including contacts, free apps, notes, images, messages, and movies. However, the app does not support transferring alarms, documents, call logs, eSIM, files, passwords, wallpapers, and bookmarks. Hopefully, an upcoming change in iOS will make transferring these types of data possible.

Samsung could use changes in upcoming iOS to improve the Smart Switch

According to available information, it seems that Apple will release an API that other brands can use to develop data transfer tools. We hope Samsung will use them to improve the Smart Switch app.

Some of Apple's solutions to improve data portability include “browser switching solutions” to transfer data between web browsers on the same device. This feature will be available in late 2024 or early 2025. By March 2025, you will also be able to change the default location system for iPhone in the EU.
