While most Android smartwatches have circular screens, recently, a report claimed that Samsung is expected to bring a square design to future Galaxy Watch models.
Since adopting Wear OS in 2021, Samsung has produced smartwatches with circular designs. But before that, the company experimented with many different designs and the original Galaxy Gear and Gear Live versions were all square watches. From Gear S2 onwards, Samsung has clearly shown its preference for circular design and it has also been very positively received by users. That also makes square smartwatch models overshadowed.
In our opinion, it seems that Samsung is planning to change the appearance of the Galaxy Watch again, returning it to its original square design. The conversion is still being enthusiastically considered internally, so this is not a final decision.
At this time, although it is not certain, it is likely that Samsung will launch a square smartwatch model on the market right after the Galaxy Watch 7 line is launched this year. However, other leaked information has not mentioned such a big change in appearance.
It is unclear why Samsung intends to return to the square design for its smartwatches. While Wear OS technically supports square screens, most apps and even Samsung's One UI interface are optimized for a circular layout. Maybe this change gives Samsung the ability to compete more strongly with the Apple Watch, which has a square design. If that becomes a reality, this is a major design change for future Samsung smartwatch lines.
