Currently, while Sony is focusing on developing large-sized camera sensors, Samsung is focusing on upgrading the resolution of its camera sensors. However, that may change in the near future.
Specifically, leaker Revegnus has just revealed information that Samsung is researching two new ISOCELL camera sensors: ISOCELL HW1 and ISOCELL HW2. If you remember, these were the company's first ISOCELL HW series sensors. ISOCELL HW1 is said to be a 1/1.05 inch sensor (nearly 1 inch) with 0.56µm pixels and a whopping 432MP resolution. ISOCELL HW2 is a 1/1.07 inch (nearly 1 inch) sensor with 0.5µm pixel size and 432 megapixel resolution.
If this information is correct, Samsung seems to be researching a 1-inch sensor but also with extremely high resolution, twice the camera sensor they are using for the new generation Galaxy S series. However, it is still unclear what improvements they will bring in photo and video quality. Furthermore, it is uncertain whether these 1-inch camera sensors will be used on Samsung's high-end Galaxy S series smartphones.
Interestingly, Revegnus believes that the Galaxy Z Fold6 will continue to use the same camera as on the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Fold5, which is the 50MP ISOCELL GN3 1/1.56-inch. However, with the Galaxy Z Fold7, the Korean company is said to switch to a 200MP camera sensor (ISOCELL HP5 1/1.3 inch) with a pixel size of 0.5µm. Let's wait and see!
