Samsung recently introduced a new “Home Appliance QR Mode” feature integrated into the Sullivan Plus visual assistance app. This feature is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to help visually impaired users easily locate QR codes on Samsung home appliances through voice guidance.
Sullivan Plus, developed by startup TUAT, is an assistive app specifically for the visually impaired, allowing images to be described and text to be read aloud. The app has now been deployed in more than 200 countries, becoming a useful tool for the visually impaired community worldwide.
When using Home Appliance QR Mode, users simply scan their surroundings with the device's camera. The app will automatically identify nearby home appliances and provide voice guidance for locating QR codes in up to 32 languages.
Currently, the feature can recognize up to 5,895 product models across 12 categories, including refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and air purifiers manufactured by Samsung from 2022 to September this year. This is achieved by using AI data that has been trained to accurately distinguish products.
Lee Bo-na, vice president of Digital Appliances at Samsung Electronics, said: “We are committed to continuously expanding our product portfolio and supported languages to make QR Mode for home appliances accessible to more users. At the same time, we will continue to improve the accessibility of each product, so that everyone can use Samsung home appliances in the most convenient way.”
Samsung also said that it will introduce more accessibility features for people with disabilities on home appliances at CES 2025, the world's largest technology exhibition taking place in Las Vegas next January. This clearly demonstrates Samsung's commitment to a more inclusive and accessible technological future for all users.
