During the Pixel 9 announcement event, Google announced that Gemini Live, an enhanced version of its Gemini AI assistant, would be coming to Pixel and Samsung smartphones and tablets. As of today, Gemini Live has begun rolling out to these devices. However, it is only available to those who have subscribed to the paid version of Gemini.

Users can have an ongoing conversation with Gemini Live as if it were a real person. You can interrupt it while it is talking to get more information about a topic and come back to it later. Gemini extensions (integrations) with other Google services, such as Calendar, Drive, Gmail, Keep, YouTube, and YouTube Music, are not yet available for Gemini Live. These extensions will be available in the coming months.

When you activate Gemini Live, you will see a waveform badge in the lower right corner with a small lightning bolt icon. Its introduction explains how to use it. You can continue the conversation or end it with two dedicated buttons.

With Gemini Live, you can chat freely with Gemini in a more natural way. You can even interrupt Gemini, for example, when you want to add more information or change the topic of the conversation. With Gemini Live, you can:

  • Talk back and forth directly: Talk to Gemini without typing, Gemini will respond verbally.
Ask Gemini for ideas: Ask Gemini to come up with gift ideas, plan an event, or plan a business.
  • Explore: Discover more details about topics that interest you.
  • Practice out loud: Practice for important occasions in a natural conversational way.
  • Gemini Live's user interface is quite clean and takes up the entire screen but still shows other apps in the background.

There are ten Gemini Live voice options to choose from. You can enable or disable the 'Interrupt Live Response' feature in the app's settings. Gemini Live is currently only available in English, with support for other languages likely to roll out in the coming months.

Samsung's digital voice assistant Bixby hasn't received as many new features as Apple's Siri and Google's Gemini in the past few years. However, Samsung has announced that Bixby will receive LLM support upgrades later this year. This will help Bixby understand natural language voice commands much better. This update will likely be released alongside One UI 7.0
