After exclusively using Snapdragon processors for the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung is expected to bring back the new Exynos chip for the Galaxy S24 series next year.

The company's next-generation Galaxy S series phones are rumored to feature the Exynos 2400 processor in some countries. While the chip has yet to be announced, a new leak has provided a look at the Exynos 2400's GPU performance.

Samsung appears to be testing and tweaking the GPU performance of the unannounced Exynos 2400 processor inside the Galaxy S24. An Exynos 2400 entry was found in Basemark's Powerboard 4.0 GPU performance test. The Eclipse 940 GPU inside the Exynos 2400 scored 1,656 points on the cross-platform Sacred Path test. 30% better GPU performance compared to Exynos 2200 Xclipse 920 GPU using Vulkan API. More importantly, it is equivalent to the performance of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, equipped with Adreno 740 GPU, which scored 1,787 points in the same test.

Since these are early days of testing and the company has months to optimize its performance and power configuration, we expect it to improve by the time the Galaxy S24 launches early next year. However, based on this initial look, we think it might not be able to match the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in terms of GPU performance. Considering that the Exynos 2200 features Ray Tracing for gaming, even the Exynos 2400 may also feature Ray Tracing and the company may have improved the ray tracing performance compared to the previous chip.

Samsung's System LSI may announce the Exynos 2400 a few weeks before the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. I hope it will use ARM's new Cortex-X4, Cortex-A720, and Cortex-A520 CPU cores. Previous leaks have pointed to twice as many GPU cores (WGP or Workgroup Processors) as the Exynos 2200, but their clock speeds and architecture are currently unclear. The chip is rumored to be manufactured using Samsung Foundry's newer generation 4nm semiconductor fabrication process.

If Samsung can't match the Exynos 2400's performance with the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, it could disappoint fans once again. Some rumors suggest that the Galaxy S24 Ultra will exclusively use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the Exynos 2400 will only be used in the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+, and that could lead to a big difference in performance between Base, Plus and Ultra models of Galaxy S24.
