Google shocked the tech world when it announced that the Pixel 8 series would be supported by seven years of software and security updates. Just like that, Google has usurped Samsung to become the Android company with the best update policy.
However, it seems that Samsung will not sit idly by. The company may be considering extending the update delivery time. Samsung CEO Shin-Chul Baik told SamMobile that the company is "actively discussing" the possibility of providing more than five years of security updates for its phone models.
He added that Samsung is willing to support longer than five years of security updates due to potential regulations. Perhaps he was referring to new regulations proposed by the EU, which call for companies to provide at least five years of system updates for phones.
However, Samsung made no mention of operating system updates. Therefore, it is possible that the company will extend the time it takes to provide security patches while remaining faithful to four major operating system upgrades. Even so, this is still a positive step for the Android ecosystem, after all, Samsung is still the largest Android phone company in the world.
We're curious to know how Samsung is able to extend the time it takes to deliver security updates since processor vendors are a major obstacle. Although Samsung uses home-grown Exynos processors, they also order more from Qualcomm and MediaTek. Therefore, Samsung may have to convince these processor companies to extend their software support period.
