The upcoming Galaxy S25 could be Samsung’s first flagship phone to support A/B system partitioning – also known as seamless updates. The Galaxy S25 series will launch early next year with One UI 7 based on Android 15.
While the latest rumors suggest that Google’s seamless updates feature is finally coming to the Galaxy S series, it’s worth noting that the Galaxy S25 series won’t be the first phone to support it.
Samsung first tested seamless updates earlier this year with the Galaxy A55. This makes it the first Galaxy phone to support seamless updates – a feature Google introduced in 2016.
Currently, the Galaxy A55 remains the only Galaxy phone that supports A/B system partitioning. Samsung may have learned a lot of the necessary experience to roll out seamless updates to more Galaxy phones.
What is the seamless update?
Seamless updates essentially allow your device to reboot faster after installing an update by swapping the system partition from A to B or vice versa every time a new update is installed. The update will be installed on partition B if your phone is using partition A and vice versa.
As a result, your Android device will always run from a partition different from the one it uses to download and install software updates. This allows updates to be installed without interrupting your use of your phone.
You will still be prompted to reboot your device after an update is installed so it can swap to another partition. However, boot times are much faster than before.
Samsung didn't really care about seamless updates until earlier this year, even though the feature has been around for nearly a decade.
