Samsung is expected to launch One UI 8 Watch in the coming months, which will come with Google's new Wear OS 6 operating system. The next-generation smartwatches will be the first to come with the software, before the company begins rolling out the update to eligible devices.
However, it's likely that this will be the last major update, or may not even be released for the first Galaxy Watch models running Wear OS, which marked Samsung's transition from Tizen to Wear OS in 2021.
The Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic were launched in August 2021, as Samsung's first smartwatches to run Wear OS. Since then, all new Galaxy Watch models have used the platform instead of Samsung's own Tizen operating system.
At launch, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic were promised four years of major software updates. That leaves the possibility that One UI 8 Watch could be the last update for these two devices. However, according to 9to5Google, it is possible that they will not receive this update if the rollout is delayed.
Samsung is expected to introduce the new generation of Galaxy Watch in July, and these devices will come with One UI 8 Watch pre-installed right away. After that, Samsung will take a few more months to release the update for existing models like the Galaxy Watch 7 or Galaxy Watch Ultra.
The four-year software support commitment for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic ends in August 2025. If Samsung fails to release the update before then, it is likely that these two devices will miss out completely, as the company does not typically extend the support period beyond the initial commitment.
