Samsung to launch a phone with a movable camera cluster?

Samsung has just been granted a patent for a movable camera system on mobile devices, promising to bring flexibility and improve photo quality. Although often considered conservative in design, the company is still constantly experimenting with new technology. This mobile camera system seems to be suitable for devices with foldable or rollable screens, helping to optimize the photography experience on smartphones and tablets.

This patent was filed by Samsung on January 10, 2022, through the US Design IP Portal and has just been approved with the code D1066344. According to MySmartPrice, Samsung has been researching and testing this idea since 2019, showing that this is not a sudden invention but a strategic plan.

The sketch in the patent describes a single camera system that can change position according to user needs. Specifically, the camera can move to function as a front or rear camera, allowing the same sensor to be used for both selfies and regular photos. This could eliminate the need for a separate front camera, resulting in better image quality and optimized screen design.

The documents also suggest that the system could be tailored for foldable or rollable phones or even tablets. The new design builds on prototypes that Samsung has shown since 2019, suggesting that the company is looking to improve and optimize the technology.

However, this is just a patent, and there is no guarantee that the technology will appear on commercial devices in the future. However, even if it is not directly applied, the progress made during the research process could still help Samsung improve its flagship products. If the company continues to pursue innovation, we may soon see the much-anticipated breakthroughs in the upcoming Galaxy lines.
