Google and Samsung have unveiled the Galaxy Watch for Kids. Google has just explained how Samsung helped them optimize Wear OS for kids, and how the system can be used to create watches that work independently without a phone.
Samsung helps optimize Wear OS for kids
The Galaxy Watch for Kids – available for the first time on the LTE option of the Galaxy Watch 7 – allows Wear OS watches to work completely independently, without needing to be connected to a phone. So even if a child doesn’t have an Android phone, they can still have a Wear OS watch.
The following features make the Galaxy Watch more kid-friendly:
- No phone required
- Location sharing
- Kid-friendly apps
- Parents/guardians can manage kids' contacts
- Limit app usage during School Time
Google has explained to software developers that they can create kid-friendly apps by following specific guidelines and making the app less battery-intensive.
The company wants software developers to create apps that are fun while still encouraging kids to be active. Additionally, apps should be easy enough for kids ages six and up to use and contain appropriate content.
More specifically, Google says that all kids watch apps should adhere to the following standards:
- Wear OS app quality
- Standalone Wear OS apps
- Kids' experience on Wear OS
Furthermore, the company says that software developers should create apps that can be used even when the watch is offline. Apps should also require minimal network and GPS connectivity to function. They should also use low-power APIs to track activities and workouts.
Watch faces designed for kids should use the new Watch Face Format, which is required on Wear OS 5 and later. They should also be optimized for an always-on display and follow Google’s quality standards for kids.
Wear OS apps and watch faces created for kids will need to comply with the Google Play Store’s age requirements. More watchmakers may eventually make Wear OS watches for kids. We hope Samsung releases an LTE option for the Galaxy Watch FE so parents don't have to shell out a fortune to buy a Wear OS watch for their kids.
